this film will be triggering for anyone who has experience with domestic abuse or controlling relationships

the whole premise of the film is that bear makes a wish for niki to love him more than anyone, niki becomes obsessed to the point of isolating bear from his friends, becoming aggressive with bear both privately and in public and becoming violent with bears friends

Context: The movie is about a woman (Nikki) under the influence of a spell. Her actions under this spell are non-consensual to her actual self.

That being said, Fake-Nikki puts up with a lot from Bear, who is keeping Real-Nikki trapped. Fake-Nikki loves Bear unconditionally, where Real-Nikki wants him dead. Bear puts up with a lot of Fake-Nikki’s horrifying behavior. This question doesn’t have a clear answer for this movie, as it’s extremely interpretive (as we’re dealing with a posession trope).

If you struggle with themes of DV, this film may be a hard watch. However, the “forgiveness” this question poses has no linear, clear answer (as suggested by the close tie in yes/no votes as of 5/17/26).

Gaslighting occurs when someone is intentionally manipulated with the goal causing them to question their sense of what is real, their grasp on reality, or their sanity.

There is only one instance of gaslighting, when a character kills another character, and tells a third character that it is the third character’s fault. All other instances of “gaslighting” are actually other forms of manipulation, including lying, hiding the truth, wearing someone down with mistreatment.

Words are important.

No, as Nikki (the main point of horror for this film) is under the influence of a spell for all the violence she commits. In a way, the two fractioned versions of herself are both the abused and abuser, but she herself (Real-Nikki) is abhorrently opposed to the abuse by Possessed-Nikki the entire time.

Complicated. Will include minor spoilers but will keep it brief.

Bear’s (MC) cat dies off screen early on. Spilled pills suggest the cat overdosed. The corpse of the cat is seen many times. The cat is made into a spectacle by Nikki under the influence of a spell. The cat is eventually turned into a sandwich and nonconsentually fed to Bear.

Abused? no...

Mutilated after death and the abuse of this dead animal turned into a spectacle? yes

Three.

The first has their head repeatedly slammed into a brick, caving their face in. It all happens very quickly and the result looks fake and relatively campy, similar to a haunted house prop. The directors states that they used a dummy rigged to blood tubes to create this effect, which is why it doesn't look very realistic. If you have seen Midsommar, just know it isn't nearly as graphic or close up as the head smashing scenes in that movie. The best way I can describe what the result looks like is you see the top of her head and the lower part of her jaw and then it just looks like dark bloody lumps, an eyeball and a few teeth. Unrealistic and not overly gross. Throughout the sequence her head hits the car horn and the dialogue after is meant to be darkly comedic.

The second gets shot in the head. It's extremely quick without really any detail and cuts away almost immediately.

The third takes a bunch of pills and dies bloodlessly.

Bear finds out Nikki will be freed if and only if he dies. He contemplates suicide for this reason but ultimately does not want to do it. Major ending spoilers- he attempts suicide but then changes his mind. He ends up dying anyway because he is unable to undo his attempt for plot related reasons

Bear (MC) possesses Nikki with a spell causing her to be obsessed with him. As a result, she never leaves his house unless to be with/follow him. He completely strips away her autonomy, so one could argue it’s kidnapping.

There are only THREE Jump Scares:

1 – The first time Bear and Nikki are kissing on the bed. Shortly after they start kissing, Nikki temporarily regains control of her body and starts screaming.

2 – A little later on, Bear wakes up around 3am. He looks around and sees Nikki in the corner of the room. She tells him to go back to sleep and he lays there, until Nikki eventually screams loudly again.

3 – Towards the end, Bear and Sarah are talking in the car. The conversation shifts to Sarah's letter and soon after, Nikki smashes through the window.

this is a hesitant yes. ***SPOILERS***

at the end of the car scene with Bear and Sara, there's an upclose shot of Sara's mutilated face after she's been killed, focused on her face for abt 5-10 seconds before the scene changes. there aren't any deep or obvious holes, but there's some areas of the face that do have some hole-like formations and did creep me out a little (as someone who has trypophobia)

here to add (graphic) detail to the other comments:

1. (music store) the actual vomiting lasts maybe 5-10 seconds. there's a wind up to it and then he grabs a trash can which obscures his face and any of the vomit. so no visual. audio is average, not particularly worse than you'd expect.

2. (bear returns home) nikki has vomit on her chin and chest for maybe 30 seconds. after about 30 more seconds of her talking to bear from the shower there is a 5 second shot of the vomit puddle. it's actually a mix of bodily fluids. but the vomit on her and the floor kinda looks more like blood/dookie or when your dog throws up kibble. it's also pretty dark and hard to see which made it less triggering for me.

3. (couch fight) when nikki's yelling at him at the end, she projectile vomits like a tablespoon of milky fluid onto his chest in a split second as she's talking. do not recall any vomit sounds, it's just like a random squirt.

4. there's a fourth thing that might be triggering for people too. this happens within ~3 minutes of the third one. while bear is in the bath tub, he gags. there is some fingers-down-throat and white foam. it's spread out over several minutes lasting until the literal ending of the film

but yeah none of these things really bothered me at all after I'd read the other doesthedogdie notes. I was expecting way worse and grosser. hope y'all have a good time :)

It isn't graphic. Bear leaves Nikki home alone and she waits for him all day in the same spot. When he gets home she has vomit and other bodily fluids on herself and on the floor. Not nearly as bad as it sounds.

Besides for the presence of magic, there are two instances where there is visual unreality. In one, a character walks backwards, appearing to “rewind” while the rest of the scene appears normal. In another, a character creeps around the back of the shot, making strange movements and appearing to be depicted in a lower frame rate, almost like stop motion.

No. A panic attack occurs when there is no actual stimulus and someone is overcome with intense panic over the course of minutes. Characters panicking about what is actually going on around them being terrifying is not a panic attack.

Spoilers: a possessed character briefly becomes aware of what is happening around her. She panics for a few seconds, then becomes possessed again. The possessed version of her calls it a panic attack, obviously lying, to attempt to reclaim the situation. This does not look like the symptoms of a panic attack, and her reasons for being afraid are incredibly justified.

There are a few bloody/gory sequences. Most of these last about half a second to a few seconds and then cut away quickly and aren't very graphic. The most graphic part of the film is designed to be darkly comedic and absurdist, and involves a character repeatedly having their face smashed into a brick on top of a steering wheel, causing the car to repeatedly honk. The after math is shown and look very campy and fake, similar to an effect from an 80s horror movie. The filmmakers stated that they used a dummy with tubes to pump blood through it, so effective all you're seeing is a mannequin with fake blood being hit repeatedly against a hard foam brick.

Most scenes of violence feature small amounts of blood without excessive gore.

The most violent scene is designed to be darkly comedic and involves a character repeatedly having their face smashed onto a brick on top of a steering wheel, causing the car to repeatedly honk. The aftermath is very campy and unrealistic looking.

Directors have stated in interviews this effect was achieved by using a dummy with tubes inside to pump blood through. The dummy was then smashed into a hard foam brick.
